    What The Trades Are Facing

The Numbers Nobody Puts in the Safety Manual

Construction is losing people faster than it can hire them — and the numbers below show why the problem isn't only on the jobsite.

    349
    k
Net new workers the industry needs this year alone. Every person you lose is harder to replace than ever.
    3
    k
The rate construction workers die from a drug overdose compared to the average American worker.
    19
    %
Of construction workers live with a substance use disorder — about double the rate of the general workforce.
    56
Suicides per 100,000 male construction workers each year. one of the highest rates of any industry, and roughly four times the national average.

    What it costs when

    no one shows up.

    • Turnover you can't hire your way out of
    • Injuries, near misses, and OSHA citations that keep you off bids
    • A reputation that takes years to rebuild
    • Foremen and supervisors burning out from carrying it alone
    • Crews that never recover after a fatality or a loss

    Support That's Already on Site

Most companies have paperwork for these problems; we give your leaders and crews the training, response, and relationships that actually change outcomes.

Train Your Leaders Before the Worst Day Happens

Most companies have a plan for the physical side of an incident: first aid, reporting, investigation. Few have a plan for the people. Critical Incident Stress Management fills that gap. Your team learns to spot the signs of traumatic stress, support coworkers one-on-one and as a group, and know when someone needs more help.

Building Hope delivers CISM training in partnership with Lake CISM, a training and consulting service that specializes in training those who serve others.

    What your team can learn:

    • Assisting Individuals in Crisis: How to support one coworker through the hours and days after an incident
    • Group Crisis Intervention: How to lead a crew through a shared traumatic event
    • Peer Support: How to be the person coworkers trust when they're struggling
    • On-Site or Virtual: Training at your location or online, built around your schedule

Fuzzy Lake and JoAnn Fiorello bring over 30 years of combined experience supporting first responders and individuals in high-stress environments. Fuzzy served on the Indiana State Police CISM team and co-founded the East Central Indiana CISM team, which now has 53 members serving seven counties. Their credentials include a master's degree in Addiction Intervention and Grief Counseling, along with certifications in professional chaplaincy, crisis intervention, and grief work.

Someone in Your Corner, Right on the Jobsite

When something goes wrong, your crew shouldn't have to go looking for help. Our chaplains come to them.

Building Hope chaplains show up where your people work: the jobsite, the shop, the break room. They give your team a steady presence, a confidential conversation, and real care, whether it's the day after an incident or an ordinary Tuesday when someone's carrying more than they let on.

Chaplains serve everyone on your team, whatever their background or beliefs. Conversations stay confidential, and support is always voluntary.

    What's included:

    • Crisis Response: On-site support after accidents, injuries, or loss
    • Regular Visits: Consistent presence so your crew knows who we are before they need us
    • Confidential Conversations: A safe person to talk to outside the chain of command
    • Leadership Support: Guidance for owners and supervisors handling hard situations

Our chaplain team includes professionally certified chaplains with backgrounds in crisis intervention and grief work.

Support That Lasts After the Jobsite Clears

Recovery doesn't happen in a day. We make sure your employees and their families aren't left to figure it out alone.

After the initial crisis passes, the real work of healing begins, and that's often when people fall through the cracks. Building Hope connects your employees and their families with practical tools, trusted referrals, and continued support for as long as they need it.

    What's included:

    • Referral Network: Connections to vetted counselors, recovery programs, and community services
    • Family Support: Resources for spouses and kids affected by what happened at work
    • Practical Tools: Guides and materials for stress, grief, and recovery
    • Follow-Up Care: Check-ins after an incident so no one slips through the cracks

    About building hope

At Orange Diamond Safety we kept seeing the same thing: companies were getting serious about fall protection and trench safety while the biggest threats to their crews: addiction, isolation, untreated crisis went unaddressed because nobody knew what to do about them.

So we built an organization that does. We're a nonprofit serving construction and blue-collar companies across Central Ohio with workplace chaplains, critical incident support, and drug-free workplace training.

Our mission is simple: no worker in Central Ohio should face the hardest thing in their life alone, and no company should have to figure out how to help them by themselves.

What It Looks Like When People Get Built Up

    • Workers ask for help earlier, before it becomes a crisis
    • Supervisors know what to say and who to call
    • Trust grows. Safety improves. The company gets stronger.
    • Crews stay together instead of turning over every season
    • Families get support, not just employees
    • Recovery becomes possible without losing a paycheck

    Getting Started Is Simple.

    Connect

We sit down with your leadership to understand your workforce, your culture, and what your people are actually dealing with.

    1

    Build the support

We introduce chaplain presence, training, and crisis response built around your company — not a template.

    2

    Strengthen the crew

Your people feel supported. Your leaders have tools. Your culture gets healthier, safer, and more resilient.

    3

Let's be honest aAbout the work.

This is not a quick fix. It's not a logo on a wall or a box to check. If you're looking for something you can point to without actually doing anything, we're not your people.

Building people is a marathon. It takes buy-in from ownership, patience, and a real belief that your workforce is worth investing in.

But if you've been carrying the weight of your crew's hardest days and wishing there was a better way — we'd like to help you carry it.

    faq's

Because your people are dealing with things a paycheck can't fix, and nobody at your company is equipped to have those conversations. A chaplain gives your employees a trusted, confidential person to talk to — and gives you a way to care for your team without crossing lines you shouldn't cross.

No. Our chaplains serve everyone regardless of belief, and participation is always voluntary. Our CISM team members are introduced as trained crisis-intervention and peer-support responders, not by a religious title. The goal is to remove barriers so people actually accept help.

Yes. A high EMR quietly prices you out of work, so we help you address the root causes — inspections, training, and corrective action that build a safer record over time. We can't promise a number, but lowering risk is exactly what we do.

No. CISM is structured peer support and emotional first aid. Our team doesn't diagnose or treat anyone. They listen, stabilize, inform, and connect people to qualified professionals when that's what's needed.

Yes. Confidentiality is foundational to both chaplaincy and CISM, within the limits of the law and safety. We don't report conversations back to management.
